Swine Diseases
Swine diseases are a concern for nearly every producer, regardless
of size of operation. Swine diseases such as erysipelas, PRRS, SIV and parvovirus damage animal health and destroy profits. A comprehensive
health program will help prevent these swine diseases and keep breeding
stock and feeder pigs healthy, growing and profitable.
These are some of the swine diseases that affect U.S. producers:
- Erysipelas is an infectious swine
disease caused by bacteria and can occur in acute, subacute
and chronic forms. Signs of this swine disease include sudden
death, fever, depression, reduced appetite, skin lesions
and stiffness.
- Reproductive diseases diseases result
in abortion, poor conception rates, smaller litters and lightweight
pigs. Common swine diseases that affect reproduction are
enterovirus, erysipelas, leptospirosis, PRRS and porcine
parvovirus.
- Respiratory diseases in swine affect
pigs from birth through finishing and have the greatest impact
around 18 tro 20 weeks of age. Coughing, sneezing, reduced
gains and lower feed conversion are symptoms of this complex
of swine diseases.
- Enteritis, also known as scours
or diarrhea is a leading killer of baby pigs. This swine
disease is caused by E. coli bacteria and accounts
for 42% of all death losses.
